YV Summer Internship: A challenging and rewarding experience

Joy HarrowayMy name is Joy Harroway and I participated in Youth Villages’ summer internship program in 2012. It was both a rewarding and challenging experience.  Anyone interested in the social sciences work field should consider applying for this extraordinary program.  At first I was a little hesitant about working with this population of youth. Once I got to know each of the youth, I started to feel more comfortable and enjoyed coming to work every day. I interned in one of the group homes and was able to learn how to be patient and how to de-escalate difficult situations. During my time at Youth Villages, I gained the confidence I need to be able focus on making a difference in children’s lives.

College students should participate in this internship program so that they can be exposed to more than just what colleges and universities teach us. With this internship, my eyes were opened to a whole new side of life. This is a challenging internship, but an overall rewarding and fun experience. What helps you get through the challenging parts is remembering that we as interns have the opportunity to make a difference in youths’ lives and play an important role in getting them back on the right track to living life the way it is meant to be lived.

To apply for our 2013 summer internship, please visit www.youthvillages.org/students before February 1st.
